Research Scientist, Postdoc, Remote Sensing at the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) Helsinki, Finland; Luke is looking for a Research Scientist, as a postdoc researcher for a 2,5 -year position. The role involves developing remote sensing-based tools and methods for climate-resilient forest and peatland management.
The main responsibilities of the postdoctoral research scientist focus on remote sensing of forests and peatlands. The objectives include developing remote sensing-based tools and methods for climate-resilient forest and peatland management. Key tasks involve processing and analyzing diverse data sources, including satellite, LiDAR, drone imagery, and field inventory data. Responsibilities may also include conducting drone flights, performing fieldwork, and other supporting tasks. Additionally, the role involves project management, reporting, and contributing to research funding applications.
Tasks can be tailored to align with your skills and interests. The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Dr. Parvez Rana and he/she will work closely with Luke’s remote sensing experts, as well as project collaborators from Austria, Spain, Italy, and Sweden. International collaboration is essential, as the Ecosystem and modeling group (ESMA) is involved in several EU Horizon projects and maintains strong ties within the European forest and peatland research community.
Expectations for applicant
To succeed in this role, you should have expertise in managing large spatial datasets related to forests, peatlands, or ecological modeling; knowledge of remote sensing data and tools; and strong skills in statistical modeling methods. We expect: • a recently (max 5 years ago) completed Ph.D in a relevant field (e.g., forestry, physical geography, environmental science, statistics, machine learning, or a related area)
• strong background in remote sensing, with proficient computer and software skills (e.g., R, Python, ArcGIS) • skills in applying statistical methods and handling large datasets • interest in understanding forest and peatland biodiversity • good command of English (both oral and written) The selection process considers the quantity and quality of scientific publications in forestry, ecology and remote sensing journals.

Salary basis
The position is at complexity level 8 in Luke's salary system and the position specific salary is EUR 3 512,13 per month. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid (max. 50% of the position specific salary). A new employee's personal performance component depends on competence and experience and generally falls in the range of 15-20 %. The applicant may also present a separate salary request.
